Rio Carnival Trials Cellular Intercom System for Greater Freedom While Maintaining Reliable Communications A pre-launch field trial with a major Brazilian broadcaster demonstrates the potential of cellular-based intercom for high-density live production environments. Edited by Terry Persun Stage Events Oct 19, 2026 Highlighting the results of a pre-launch field trial of FreeSpeak Cell™ during Carnival 2026 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Clear-Com® conducts a proof-of-concept demonstration for how cellular-based intercoms can provide reliable, wide-area communications for broadcast teams. This is particularly important when operating in one of the world’s most demanding live production environments. The trial was conducted in partnership with Brazilian systems integrator Savana Comunicações. The field trial results demonstrated the system's ability to provide wide-area mobility and reliable communications for broadcast teams operating amid an exceptionally high concentration of people, mobile devices, and wireless systems. Four FreeSpeak Cell beltpacks were deployed during live Carnival coverage at the Marquês de Sapucaí Sambadrome. The deployment gave camera operators and reporters the freedom to move throughout the venue while maintaining communication with production teams. FreeSpeak Cell operates over 4G LTE and 5G cellular networks, providing wide-area mobility without the need for conventional localized RF infrastructure. Images courtesy of Clear-Com. “This deployment gave us an opportunity to put FreeSpeak Cell through its paces in a particularly demanding live production environment,” said João Pedro Machado Homem, CTO at Savana Comunicações. “The results demonstrated the potential of cellular intercom to give broadcast teams greater freedom to move while maintaining the reliable communications workflows they depend on.” Systems Integration For the proof of concept, Savana configured an Eclipse® HX digital matrix running an EHX software version supporting FreeSpeak Cell. The broadcaster’s existing Eclipse systems were operating on an earlier software version, so Savana established a trunk connection between the updated Eclipse HX system and the existing intercom infrastructure, which allowed the FreeSpeak Cell beltpacks to directly integrate into the broadcaster’s established communications workflow, demonstrating how cellular intercom can complement existing Clear-Com infrastructure. Images courtesy of Clear-Com. The four beltpacks were deployed across three days of Carnival broadcasts. During the first two days, camera operators used the beltpacks while moving throughout the Sambadrome. On the third day, the units supported IFB and return communication for reporters. The deployment enabled production personnel to move freely throughout the Carnival parade route without being constrained by the coverage limitations of a traditional localized wireless system. The initial deployment used a dedicated network slice provided by Brazilian telecommunications operator TIM. This provided the broadcaster access to an isolated portion of the cellular network, separate from the thousands of consumer devices simultaneously accessing the network at the venue. Additional testing was conducted using the standard public cellular network without network slicing. Even while sharing the network with other attendees, the FreeSpeak Cell beltpacks continued to perform successfully. “The system performed extremely well, both using a dedicated network slice and when operating on the standard public cellular network. The mobility and flexibility it provided were particularly impressive to the production teams,” said Homem. Flexibility Beyond Carnival Following the successful Carnival deployment, the broadcaster’s sports division conducted additional tests during live soccer matches at two separate venues. For these deployments, the team used standard SIM cards purchased locally on the day of each event and installed them directly into the FreeSpeak Cell beltpacks. The system operated successfully at both venues, demonstrating the ability to deploy cellular intercom quickly without requiring dedicated RF infrastructure at each location. - Restoring Broken Artifacts While Maintaining Historical Integrity with Transparent 3D Printing
The Zhejiang Provincial Museum restores ancient ceramics, making missing parts visible while preserving historical traces with unique technology. Restoring Broken Artifacts While Maintaining Historical Integrity with Transparent 3D Printing The Zhejiang Provincial Museum restores ancient ceramics, making missing parts visible while preserving historical traces with unique technology. Edited by EE Staff Museums Oct 19, 2026 For cultural heritage enthusiasts and museum curators, restoring ancient artifacts without compromising their historical integrity has always been a complex challenge. But recently, the Zhejiang Provincial Museum showcased a groundbreaking approach that not only restores ancient ceramics but allows broken porcelain to be reborn through what they call blank space , which is a technique that has been labeled “aesthetics far ahead of its time.” The innovation includes a 3D printer capable of printing highly transparent materials. This technology not only restores broken antiquities for exhibitions, it also allows history buffs to bring a piece of “museum-grade” cultural heritage into their own homes. Images courtesy of Raise3D. While traditional restoration relies on opaque resins to fill missing pieces that produce a faux-antique finish which can obscure the genuine marks of history, the blank space approach is meant to complete rather than cover up the defects. Inspired by the restoration concepts of the Western Xia Tombs, this philosophy of complementing reality with imagination avoids covering old marks with new materials. Instead, transparent materials preserve the restoration traces. The transparent pieces allow viewers to instantly distinguish the historical original from the modern addition, giving dignity to the artifact’s brokenness. Transparent 3D Printing This avant-garde aesthetic is not born from thin air; it is built on high-precision digital scanning and scientific modeling. The entire workflow consists of five steps. High-precision digital scanning — Using a SCANTECH NimbleTrack-CR non-contact 3D scanner the team was able to attain data on microscopic textures invisible to the naked eye, including porcelain fracture edges and signs of wear over time. Once accurately captured, this non-destructive data provides an authentic digital texture for later operations. Images courtesy of Raise3D. Scientific modeling — To complete missing sections of an artifact, it is necessary to refer to shapes and patterns of similar artifacts and then digitally model them to complete the missing sections. As restoration team leader Zhan Qingjing stated, “Every step is designed so that the defect is seen , rather than hidden.” Images courtesy of Raise3D. Transparent 3D printing — Once a digital model is confirmed by the experts, the replacement parts are 3D printed using Raise3D’s High Clear Resin V1 on the company’s DF2+ series printer. When producing mating parts across different materials such as fitting a resin part to a porcelain artifact, dimensional accuracy becomes critical. The DLP printing technology significantly minimizes part distortion compared to LCD technology, which ensures that the printed transparent fragments fit the ancient ceramic edges perfectly for seamless integration. In addition, Raise3D’s high-transparency resin is highly resistant to yellowing, and its surface can be easily post-processed with clear coats. This allows the 3D-printed restoration parts, once integrated with the artifact, to highlight the broken beauty of the historical original through a crystal-like, transparent texture. Images courtesy of Raise3D. Fine post-processing — Once the replacement parts are printed, they go through a number of stages where they are cleaned, coated, and checked for accurate alignment with the original artifact. Images courtesy of Raise3D. Bonding restoration — Bonding the 3D printed part to the original artifact completes the tasks and is the final step before offering the artifact to the public for viewing. Images courtesy of Raise3D. Inspired by this transparent restoration technique, the Zhejiang Provincial Museum has launched a series of cultural creative products. Thanks to the scalability and precision of the transparent 3D printer, artifact lovers can purchase scaled-down replicas of these ceramics. These creative souvenirs feature the exact same transparent resin integration, allowing customers to touch museum-grade restoration techniques right at home. By combining technology with the aesthetics of blank space, the Zhejiang Provincial Museum is not just preserving the past but redefining how we interact with the marks of history. - How to Digitize an Entire Baseball Stadium in 30 Minutes
Digitizing an entire 6,700-seater stadium, inside and out — including the bleachers, boxes, bars, field, scoreboard, and monuments, in full color with no detail left uncaptured — might sound impossible, but it isn’t. How to Digitize an Entire Baseball Stadium in 30 Minutes Digitizing an entire 6,700-seater stadium, inside and out — including the bleachers, boxes, bars, field, scoreboard, and monuments, in full color with no detail left uncaptured — might sound impossible, but it isn’t. Paul Hanaphy Cool Stuff Oct 13, 2026 Just image getting a complete digital twin captured in just 30 minutes. Potential applications might include complete renovation, heritage preservation, event planning, health and safety, and virtual 3D stadium tours. Extend those possibilities into manufacturing facility design, aerospace or marine interior design, and much more. This is the potential. Mounting the versatile Artec Jet to a backpack allows you to capture wider environments as fast as you can explore them. Simply walk your site, close the loop, and Artec Twins will generate a virtual replica for visualization and analysis. You can also deploy other Artec 3D scanners including Artec Ray II inside scenes and combine datasets for higher accuracy where you need it. Artec Jet is a high-speed simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) LiDAR mapping system used to fully capture large-scale environments, industrial facilities, and more providing survey-grade accuracy, which is commonly accepted to be 1mm or less. Images courtesy of Digitize Design. Since its opening days, Fluor Field has played host to Greenville Drive, a South Atlantic League affiliate for the Boston Red Sox. The baseball field was built to replicate the dimensions of Fenway Park, home of the Red Sox. The ground even features its own version of the iconic “Green Monster” field wall. Maintaining the South Carolina stadium is no mean feat. New seating, lighting, and concourse amenities are constantly being rolled out to improve the fan experience. Ground staff need to contend with a busy schedule, as well as tight construction timelines. Renovation can also be complicated by a lack of as-built data – existing designs may not reflect reality after 20 years. Digitizing the Stadium An ideal situation would have the site empty, removing troublesome moving objects from the scene, but Fluor Field is a hive of activity between games, as staff, mowers, and sprinklers continue working around the clock. Fortunately, Artec Ambassador, Digitize Designs, knew that the Artec Jet could be deployed by hand, backpack, pole, cage, vehicle, robot, or even a drone. They decided that walking through the grounds with Jet attached to a backpack proved to be the most straightforward option. Artec Jet mapping the facility while attached to a backpack. Image courtesy of Digitize Design. Images courtesy of Digitize Design. Artec 3D scanning expert Nolan Doktor started at the exterior, then proceeded inside to capture the seating, boxes, balconies, and the labyrinth of rooms in Fluor Field’s interior. Jet’s 984-ft range and equipped GoPro enabled him to scan a whole scoreboard on the “Green Monster” wall from ground level in full color, as well as background advertising and other buildings. To minimize exposure to the stadium’s sprinklers, Doktor hopped onto a Gator vehicle that was mowing the pitch, allowing for a quick loop around the perimeter and full area capture. Artec Jet is IP65-rated, so it can withstand harsh conditions like rain—or sprinklers. The scanned data was then transferred to Artec Twins to process the information. Artec Twins comes with the tools needed for dynamic visualization and analysis. The software renders huge environments at high speed, allowing users to instantly review data, traverse captured point clouds, and toggle between height, color, trajectory, capture time, and orientation overlays. A digital twin of Fluor Field baseball stadium. Images courtesy of Digitize Design. According to Doktor, “By using the platform’s elevation filters, it was possible to identify individual rooms and capture complete as-built floorplans for use cases like interior design, renovation, or safety planning.” Because Artec Jet also works with real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning as well as ground control points (GCPs), which act like targets in handheld 3D scanning, it can focus in on certain floors. To collect finer details, the team could have used Artec’s Ray II, a 0.075-inch accuracy tripod-mountable LiDAR scanner for critical areas like doors, windows, and intersections. But in this case, Jet was more than up to the job. Panoramic 360 o color capture ensured areas ranging from entry gates to a gift shop and a child’s play area were digitized with incredible fidelity. Fluor Field baseball stadium in Artec Twins with the elevation mapping overlay. Images courtesy of Digitize Design. With Fluor Field actually renovated ahead of the current season, it was clear that Artec Jet had an important role in the project. Having the data will also play in future infrastructure projects. Capturing as-built surfaces is vital to maintenance and renovation since historic buildings typically have no floor plans. Artec scans reduce the need for manual measurement and minimize the potential for human error. For example, in the case of Fluor Field, if they were tasked with expanding capacity architects could overlay proposed section layouts onto Jet point clouds and verify sightlines or structural clearances without a single return visit. The same applies to door widths and ceiling heights with concourse renovations. Even a scoreboard or lighting retrofit becomes simpler when engineers can confirm mounting points, and cable runs against existing infrastructure in Artec Twins. Jet’s 30-minute capture window means that data can be gathered between games if necessary. With Artec Twins’ Gaussian Splatting functionality generating lifelike visuals from the same dataset, applications extend into heritage preservation and virtual fan experiences too. - The Sound Engineering at the Vienna State Opera
Chief sound engineer shares the challenges of live performance in a world-class historical venue. The Sound Engineering at the Vienna State Opera Chief sound engineer shares the challenges of live performance in a world-class historical venue. Judit Hollos Spoerli, Corporate Communications Manager at LEMO Stage Events Oct 19, 2026 Music As twilight settles over Vienna, the curtain rises on Mozart's beloved opera The Magic Flute. When the Queen of the Night unleashes the piercing opening notes of her famous “rage aria,” over 2,000 pairs of eyes and ears are spellbound, drawn to the vibrant stage of the Vienna State Opera. Her dazzling coloratura soars effortlessly, carried with crystalline clarity through the Staatsoper's masterfully tuned sound system. Image credit: ©Wiener Staatsoper/ Michael Pöhn. Backstage, unseen by the enraptured audience, lies a delicate cobweb of cables and connectors—an intricate, silent network binding microphone to loudspeaker, performer to listener. Athanasios Rovakis is the head of the Audio and Video Department and is responsible for ensuring that every performance sounds perfect—from rehearsals to final curtain, sound quality is paramount. Rovakis leads a team of thirteen professionals where a typical day involves rehearsals in the morning or an evening performance, and on some days both. The iconic Vienna State Opera opened on May 25, 1869. A blend of Gothic and Renaissance elements, with some details even influenced by Emperor Franz Joseph himself. The now world-famous Staatsoper, cherished by the people of Vienna, offers 1709 seats and 435 standing places. Each season, around 350 performances of over 60 different operas and ballets take place on the main stage and in the state rooms, alongside over 800 guided tours and other events. In total, around 900,000 people visit the opera house each season. Image courtesy of LEMO. Precision connectivity behind the scenes is handled by LEMO connectors, which play a crucial role in sound quality. The company’s 4S.304 connectors are hooked to the microphones and loudspeakers all over backstage, some of which have been there for nearly thirty years without failure. Other connectors include the 4E.675 and 3K.93C SMPTE, which are used to bridge to the world beyond the state—the Austrian Television’s OB vans linked to the heart of the stage. Again, these connectors have operated night after night for hundreds of performances every season—unseen but essential. Image courtesy of LEMO. According to Rovakis, “The geometry of the hall, the materials used, acoustic reflectors, and the layout of the boxes all contribute to the unique sound.” Yet, working with a historic building has its challenges. All technological upgrades must be carefully integrated to respect the existing architecture. The overall setup uses a wide range of equipment because the selection for each production must ensure that any sound system change is compatible with all sixty productions in the repertoire. Equipment selection is only made after thorough testing, to be sure that it meets the specific needs of the performances. “Over the past ten years, we have upgraded to a modern digital mixing console, installed wireless systems, high-quality modern loudspeakers, and a powerful video projector,” Rovakis said. The team performs a complete system check before every performance, which includes the connectors. According to Rovakis, “LEMO connectors have proven to be incredibly reliable.” For information: LEMO Vienna State Opera SMPTE Connectors Lead image credit: ©Wiener Staatsoper/ Michael Pöhn.
